Is CMC Markets safe?

To be certain that a brokerage is safe, we highly advise that you check two facts:

  • how you are protected if something goes wrong
  • the background of the broker.

How you are protected

The investor protection amount, the regulator, and the legal entity that serves you differ according to your residency.

CMC Markets provides negative balance protection for UK and EU clients. Negative balance protection means that your account balance can't go into negative.

Background

CMC Markets was established in 1989. The longer track record a broker has, the more proof we have that it has successfully survived previous financial crises.
CMC Markets is listed on the London Stock Exchange, which is a big plus for safety as CMC Markets releases financial statements regularly and transparently.
Also, CMC Markets regularly discloses reports on the quality of trade executions (such as average cost, speed or likelihood of execution), which is a really transparent practice and not very common at other brokers.
Having a long track record, being listed on a stock exchange and being regulated by top-tier authorities are all great signs for CMC Markets's safety.

Account base currencies

At CMC Markets, you can choose from the following 10 base currencies:

GBPEURUSDAUS
CADNOKNZDPLN
SEKSGD

This base currency selection applies when you open a CFD account. However, not all 10 may be available to you; clients from most countries can typically only choose from among two or three major currencies (such as EUR and USD) and their home currency (if it is among the 10 currencies).
For spread betting accounts, only British pounds and euros are accepted.

CMC Markets offers a great base currency selection when compared to its closest competitors.

BrokerNumber of base currencies
CMC Markets10
IG6
XTB5

Why does this matter? For two reasons. If you fund your trading account in the same currency as your bank account or you trade assets in the same currency as your trading account base currency, you won't have to pay a conversion fee.

A convenient way to save on currency conversion fees is by opening a multi-currency bank account at a digital bank. These usually offer bank accounts in several currencies with great currency exchange rates, as well as free or cheap international bank transfers. Opening an account only takes a few minutes on your phone.

Deposit fees and options

CMC Markets charges no deposit fees.

Besides bank transfer, you can use credit/debit cards for depositing funds.

CMC Markets withdrawal fees and options

CMC Markets charges no withdrawal fees.

However, international withdrawals may be subject to a conversion fee. An international bank transfer at CMC Markets is defined as withdrawing your money to a bank account denominated in a currency other than your CMC Markets account base currency; e.g. if you withdraw from your GBP-based brokerage account to your EUR-based bank account.

You can use the same options for withdrawal as for deposit. There are some limitations: e.g. if you have a spread betting account, you can't withdraw to MasterCard credit/debit cards.

Product selection

Score: 2.5/5

CMC Markets offers an exceptionally wide selection of CFDs and forex pairs, but you can't trade other popular asset classes such as real stocks or ETFs (except for Australian clients).

CMC Markets is primarily a CFD and forex broker. Whether you wish to trade CFDs of currency pairs, stock indices, stocks, ETFs, commodities, bonds or cryptos, you will find an extraordinarily wide selection of products at CMC Markets. This stands out compared with the product range of its main competitors.

Disclaimer: CFDs are complex instruments and come with a high risk of losing money rapidly due to leverage. 67% of retail investor accounts lose money when trading CFDs with this provider. You should consider whether you understand how CFDs work and whether you can afford to take the high risk of losing your money.

You can't change leverage levels at CMC Markets. For forex products, it is automatically set at 30:1. This is a drawback, as changing leverage is a very useful feature when you want to lower the risk of your trade. Be careful with forex and CFD trading, as preset leverage levels may be too high.
